Fix Your Website Before You Run Ads

Fix Your Website Before You Run Ads | The Codex by Agrippa

In Short

Seven fixes that make every ad dollar work harder, from landing pages to tracking.

Ads are the easy part. You set a budget, pick an audience and the clicks start coming. What happens after the click is where most of that money is won or lost, and for most small businesses, the click lands on a website that was never built to turn a visitor into a call.

Before you spend on Google, Meta or anything else, check your site against this list. Every fix here makes every dollar of advertising work harder.

Make The First Screen Do Its Job

When someone lands on your site, the first screen should answer three questions in a few seconds: what do you do, who is it for, and what should I do next? If they have to scroll or guess, many of them won't.

Write one clear line that says what you do and where. Put a single obvious button next to it, whether that's book a call, get a quote or shop now. Save the clever tagline for later on the page.

Send Ads To The Right Page

If your ad is about one service, the click should land on the page about that service, not your homepage. A person searching for web design in St. Louis should arrive on a page about web design in St. Louis, with work that proves it and a way to get in touch.

That's why we built a dedicated page for each of our own services, from web design to digital marketing. Each one is a better landing spot for an ad than a general homepage.

Check It On Your Phone

Most of your ad traffic will be on a phone. Open your site on yours and be honest:

  • Does it load quickly, or do you stare at a blank screen?

  • Can you read the text without zooming?

  • Can you tap the main button with your thumb?

  • Does the contact form work, and is it short?

If any answer is no, fix that before anything else.

Show Proof

People coming from an ad don't know you yet. Give them a reason to trust you: real work, real clients, real reviews. A few strong examples beat a wall of logos. If you have a Google review or two, put them where people can see them.

Make It Easy To Reach You

Your phone number, email and booking link should be easy to find on every page. Every extra step between interest and contact costs you leads. If you take calls, make the number tappable on mobile.

Set Up Tracking Before You Spend

You can't improve what you can't see. Before you launch ads, make sure your analytics are installed and that form submissions, calls and bookings are tracked as conversions. Then the ad platform can learn which clicks turn into customers and find more of them.

Look Like The Business You Want To Be

This one is harder to measure, but it matters. If your site looks dated or doesn't match the quality of your work, people notice. A clear brand and a clean, fast site tell visitors you take your business seriously before they read a word.

The Short Version

A clear first screen. The right landing page for every ad. A site that works on a phone. Proof, easy contact and tracking. Get those right, and the same ad budget brings in more calls.
